Conceived by Sydney Camm to supersede the Hurricane as a fighter-interceptor, the Typhoon became famous as a low level ground attack aircraft. This was thanks to it's heavy cannon armament and ability to carry up to 2000lbs of bombs or 8 rocket projectiles. The Typhoon was powered by a unique H-configured 24 cylinder Napier-Sabre engine rated at over 2,000 horsepower. Typhoons played an important role in the D-Day invasions in Normandy with their attacks on German shipping and armour.

Known to its pilots as the "Gustav" it eventually served in all theatres were the Luftwaffe was active and the aircraft were also used to defend Germany against the American daylight bombing raids. The Bf109G-6 was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB605 inverted V-12 engine rated at 1,475hp and was typically armed with two 13mm MG131 guns in the upper cowl and one 20mm MG151 or 30mm Mk.108 cannon firing through the center of the spinner.

The Hawker Tempest was perhaps the ultimate British piston engined fighter developed during WWII. Similar in appearance to the Hawker Typhoon, the Tempest featured a much thinner laminar flow wing which gave much better overall performance. Tempests were used successfully during the last years of WWII ground attack aircraft, and for intercepting the German V-1 "Buzz Bombs" which were launched against London and South-East England. The Hawker Tempest was powered by a 2180 hp, 24 cylinder, H-configuration Napier-Sabre engine.
