Nice build that will challenge you
Don’t get me wrong, I loved this build – it was fun and challenging, albeit with a healthy dose of forehead-slapping.
First off, if you’re expecting that its massive size comes with massive detail, you would be wrong. There is better detail on 1/12 Tamiya kits than this one. The plus is that you get to add all the detail you can possibly stand if you just do your Jaguar research. This kit is of an early 60’s Series 1, 3.8 liter, external bonnet latch fixed head coupe.
Second, this is a re-issue of a mid-sixties kit, made with the original tooling (i.e. lots of flash, poor panel alignment, mold lines in odd places, components molded right into the firewall etc.). It’s sort of like an early 1/24 AMT kit only bigger. Lots of missed opportunities. The instructions are pretty good, just a couple of ambiguities than can be resolved by looking at subsequent steps or images of actual cars.
This is a Revell Level 5 rated kit, not because it’s difficult to put together, but because it will test your bespoke modelling skills.
Steel yourself to encounter and resolve some or all of the following plus more:
- Recommended paint colors generally don’t match the actual equipment and parts
- The “glass” in general fits poorly and the windscreen in particular does not quite span the distance between the a-pillars. Work out a gap-filling strategy in advance!
- The tires are too big for the wheels
- Some of the chromed parts will have lint(!) chromed right onto the surfaces
- The front brake discs have no calipers and the backs have calipers only on one side of each disc
- That beautiful Jaguar independent rear suspension was clearly made to not be seen. While the front is nicely detailed and fully functional (working shocks, links, steering, etc.) the rear might as well be a solid block of plastic with a metal axle stuck through it. I had to cut off entire chunks of plastic that are not part of the suspension on the real car (research!).
- There is no driveshaft(!)
Don’t bother trying to get Revell customer service (either here or in Germany) to help – there is zero support for this kit, which they readily admit.
For all its shortcomings, this truly is a blank canvas for an experienced modeler to make their own. It is definitely NOT for the “just paint & glue” crowd.
