The Japanese seem to have always taken plastic model kits seriously, producing some of the best I've ever seen, and this kit is no exception: the kit is strikingly clean with no mold lines or flashing that I noticed, no distortion in any of the parts, clear detail, a secure snap-fit to the parts, clear instructions (though in Japanese, a language I can't read, I followed the instructions easily), and no ambiguity at all about how anything fit together. The kit is manufactured in multi-coloured plastic matching the box top illustrations, and can probably be built by an experienced modeler in a day or two without painting or glue with fine results; I took the time to paint this kit instead in a slightly subtler scheme using Rustoleum Camouflage Colours rattle-can acrylic spray paints, which didn't stick very well to the plastic - this was a first for me for painting a model in this way, and the next time I try it I will follow up with a coat of spray sealer before assembly to protect the paint better, but the kit took some touch-ups with Reaper acrylic paints in similar shades and a final coat of sealer after assembly quite nicely, and - along with gluing some of the parts together during assembly for added strength - the extra effort only added a couple more hours to the project. The kit does come with a stick-on decal for one glowing eye, and it would have looked fine, but I painted the eye instead, which took minimal effort for results I'm happy with; there are no other markings or decals in the kit otherwise. I'll be using this for 28mm wargaming purposes, technically a very different scale (1/56 compared to this kit at a nominal 1/144), but there's nothing about the kit (other than the anime source material) that puts it at any particular scale, and it looks fine on a 28mm wargame tabletop: it still towers appropriately over 28mm infantry and vehicles. The resulting model kit is fully pose-able, with good stiff joints that hold poses well (at least for now, I'll see how they hold up over the longer term!) I originally planned to glue it into a fixed pose to help it hold up better over the longer term, but the joints are sturdy enough as-is to hold up to light tabletop gaming abuse for now, so I'll put off gluing into a fixed pose until later in the event the joints ever get too loosey-goosey. Out of the box, though, it's quite a beginner-friendly kit, with enough parts and steps for construction to satisfy even an advanced modeler. The design and sculpting on the figure is quite nice: the proportions are as graceful and proportionate as anything you would see in an '80s vintage giant mecha anime, looking great on artistic grounds, and as an (apparently) bad-guy mech the design is mean and sturdy enough to be be convincing as a serious sci-fi war machine for any tabletop gaming purposes, with a lot of appeal even for those of us who aren't familiar with the anime. This is my first time building one of these anime kits, and Bandai seems to have hit it out of the ballpark on this one. I'd built a few American military snap-fit model kits back in the '80s which didn't feel much like serious kits, and didn't prepare me for how nice this one would be. I can't think of a single complaint for this kit - it's an excellent model, and the price I got it at from this vendor in late 2024 it's an astonishing bargain for the quality and detail of this kit: it's easily an excellent rating at any reasonable price, but especially at the low price I paid for it!
