I’ve built a level 5 kit from Revell Germany before and I really enjoyed it so I was really looking forward to this one. But building this kit was like battling an alligator. It seemed to fight me all the way from start to finish. First the good. The kit has excellent surface details, and good details for the crew area, wheel wells and bomb bay. It also comes with two Rolls Royce engines which could be displayed by assembling the plane with side panels removed. (However, the engines are pretty plain and I added a bunch of scratch make pipes, wiring, tubes, glycol header and side components.) The finished product looks really sharp. There are many delicate parts and the model will not survive much handling. The challenges were many. There were about 220 parts and some were tiny and extremely fragile. It was the downside to having so much details. In the course of the build, I had over a dozen broken parts. I had a lot of frustrating times repairing or scratch making replacements. Even more frustrating were times when I lost tiny parts when they simply drop to my work table or snap jumped from my tweezer. The kit had some fit issues. The crew and bomb bay fit to the fuselage halves were not good. I spent quite a bit of time sanding down the interior to avoid gaps between the fuselage halves. I had to do some major work on the engine nacelles. The back ends of the nacelles simply do not fit the wings. I had to cement thin cards to the tops of the back end and finish with major puttying and sanding. I struggled with assembling the main landing gears. There were a lot of intricate and delicate parts. A few of them broke (some multiple times!) on me while I squeezed them into the wheel wells. They looked pretty nifty when finalized though. The tail wheel looked sturdy but because of the extensive handling needed to fix things elsewhere, I nevertheless ended up breaking it several times. I wondered if some of my problems was me or the intrinsic kit design. My problem with the canopy was definitely by design. The kit allowed 3 different canopy side window configurations. The kit had me select one of the three to cement to the main canopy, and that’s a bad design because it’s too easy to mess up the clear to clear plastic joint. One last gripe. The sprue connections to the parts were often too large. The act of snipping the part from the sprue sometimes caused the delicate part to break. While there were no flashings, each part needed more than the usual work to sand down the bump from the sprue connection. Would I recommend this kit? Yes. As I said before, it felt like fighting an alligator, but when it was done, I displayed it proudly.
