Reviews : AMT 1965 Chevy El Camino with camper

This kit from AMT is outstanding and would be appropriate for the first time builder. There are not a lot of parts and the metal axels makes for an easy build. The camper goes together nicely with no gaps using thin model cement. I glued the entire camper together before painting to avoid any issues with glue marks. Once painted, I then installed the camper windows using Elemer's clear glue. The front window of the camper took a bit of fiddling to get in place due to limited access, but I found that if you keep the door window off, you can easily use a paint brush handle to gently nudge it into place. I did not glue the camper to the El Camino. Even without the camper, the El Camino itself looks great and the pad printed tires are killer and worth the price of the kit.

I will say this kit is somewhat disappointing, the camper addition is my favorite feature. All windows are installed from the inside, although I gave up and glued the front window from the outside. As for the El Camino it’s somewhat disappointing. There were no mirrors included or dash decals that would have really spruced up the interior. Also the molded in exhaust and driveshaft are a letdown, but can be painted to add detail. I ended up shaving at least an 1/8 of inch off the wheel backs to help tighten up the tires on the wheels. I also trimmed another 1/8 inch or so off the front wheel mounting studs so that they didn’t stick out beyond the body.

I BUILT THE STOCK VERSION WITH THE CAMPER AND USED IT AS A TOW VEHICLE TOWING A DRAG CAR ON A TRAILER.NICELY DETAILED CAMPER,327 ENGINE AND CAR INTERIOR.BASIC ONE PIECE CHASSIS,EVERYTHING FIT TOGETHER REAL WELL.WOULD MAKE A NICE DRAG CAR WITH THE BLOWN VERSION AND DRAG TIRES.CUSTOM GRILL AND ROLL PANS FRONT AND REAR INCLUDE FOR CUSTOM VERSION.WAS IMPRESSED WITH OVERALL KIT,CAMPER WAS WHAT DREW ME TO IT.

Great model, could not wait for this one. It is however an old amt kit with one piece everything. It will be an easy build. Pics to follow.
