Model Rocket Shock Cord Mount

The model rocket shock cord mount is a means for attaching the shock cord to the body tube of a model rocket. This is the paper-like piece in the picture to the right.

Since the nose cone, when ejected by the model rocket engine ejection charge, is held to the rocket by the shock cord there can be significant forces on the shock cord mount. This is why the shock cord is not simply glued to the inside of the body tube, and the glue would not hold up and the rocket would crash land. The shock cord mount provides a secure method of attaching the shock cord.

The correct usage of a shock cord mount is typically

  • 1) Glue the shock cord to the shock cord mount along the middle length of the mount
  • 2) Apply glue to the mount and fold as directed. Allow to dry.
  • 3) Apply glue to one side of the shock cord mount and attach inside of the body tube, far enough down to allow the nose cone to rest in place. Hold in place until the glue sets (this is VERY critical!!)
  • 4) Let the glue dry. Tug on the shock cord to assure a strong attachment with the rocket.
