Dragon's USS Laffey

I felt this kit has many good qualities, the molding is probably the best I have seen. The parts fit is excellent and overall accuracy seems quite good. There are a few niggling points I'd like to bring up, partly because of the confusion it brings. The advertised parts count is interesting since a large number of supplied parts would be for other builds, different ships in the class. For instance, you have three different sets of funnels, round, flat sided and so one but only one version is correct for Laffey. The most surprising factor for me was the photo etch. As beautiful as the plastic molding was, the photo etch is not, it's almost an after though and quite crude in my opinion. Also, the lack of any railings was very surprising. Fortunately I had just finished building USS England for which I had bought the 5-Star super photo etch set for and this contained enough spare railings that I could equip Laffey with the extras. Even though I felt shorted by the omission I thoroughly enjoyed the build and would still recommend the kit even at the price paid.

Excellent kit for its age.

Despite the original molds dating back to 2008, this kit is an excellent rendition of the ship. As far as I can tell it is completely accurate to existing photographs of the ship prior to its sinking, and the fine details are excellent, at least compared to other 'older' 1/350 scale ships I've seen. Even without the PE parts included in the kit, the plastic details are quite nice, and I didn't run into any noteworthy fitting issues when putting everything together. One particular detail that stood out to me was the set of 20mm AA guns, which look incredible if you use all seven of the individual plastic and brass pieces to maximize the detail to each one. The only real problem I noticed with the kit is that there's a surprising lack of spare pieces for a few super tiny plastic pieces that are prone to getting launched across the room and lost forever (or at least until right after the project is done and squared away), but I wouldn't really consider that a fault of the kit. It's a real shame that Dragon never made more 1/350 USN DD kits, because I'm sure they'd blow basically every other maker out of the water.
