A great classic rocket kit, the Estes Little Joe 1
I've been flying model rockets off and on, mostly on, since about 1968. The Little Joe vehicles used to test the capsule escape systems were always cool and my first was for the Apollo program Little Joe 2. I built an Estes kit of it around 1969 and always hoped for a LJ1. Estes finally released one fairly recently using their tried and true Mercury capsule from the Mercury-Redstone kit which was originally a Centuri kit released in the early
'70s. So I picked up this kit and built it recently. I will say this is not a kit for the feint hearted and uses partial classic rocket construction mainly in the fins. They are built up with balsa and heavy paper similar to their original LJ2 kit. Of course the capsule and simulated nozzles on the bottom are easier being plastic. In the end it makes a cool rocket and if done carefully looks great. I've flown mine only once so far and it was a nice flight. However I lost the aero spike on the top of the escape tower and Estes ought to include 2 or 3 extras for when that happens. A nice kit and recommended.
