"A fabulous little kit, well engineered and nicely molded..."
Martin L (Manchester, NH)
Due to my aging eyes, I generally build in larger scales, but, this year I moved to a new house and haven't yet had time to set up a new man-cave and my airbrushing station. After 6 months of not being able to build anything, I was having major withdrawal symptoms and needed to do something. My only option was to brush paint, and so I chose this 1/72 scale kit that I felt I wouldn't be too disappointed if I made a mess of my first brush painted model. When I opened the box to check the contents, I was pleasantly surprised at how well engineered and nicely molded the parts were, and how well detailed it was for this small scale. The cockpit comes complete with a detailed instrument panel, side consoles, seat, foot pedals, joy-stick, ejector seat rip-cord and the side walls have some details, too. You have the option to use decals for the instrument panel and side consoles, but I chose to paint the raised details on the molded parts. The exterior surfaces have very fine and well defined recessed panel lines for highlighting when painting. The main undercarriage bay has some detail to give it some interest, but the front wheel bay is too small to include any. You can build this kit with the undercarriage down or up and the canopy closed or slid open. I always build my kits with the undercarriage down and have canopies open where possible. The kit also includes 8 rockets- 4 under each wing and two long range fuel tanks. Two options of decal markings are offered: The Indian Navy or the West German navy, I chose to go with the Indian Navy markings. The decals went on great and I had no silvering after applying them to a gloss clear coated surface and setting them down using Walthers Solvaset decal setting solution. The parts went together great without the need for any filler, therefore reducing the risk of sanding away any of the fine recessed panel lines and having to re-scribe them back into the model. Overall, I was very pleased with the end result, including my first attempt at brush painting...photos are included. I had a lot of fun building this kit and would highly recommend it for the price and how well it is detailed, engineered and molded...great job HobbyBoss!

The kit is well-detailed, with an excellent cockpit. There are detailed side consoles and some sidewall detail, a nice control stick, gunsight, and some raised dials on the instrument panel (in addition to the decal). The main gear bays are packed with detail, but the inside of the gear doors and the nose bay are, sadly, completely blank. The nose bay is small, so the lack of detail will not be seen. The surface detail is provided as fine recessed panel lines, which look great. Since this plane has a nosewheel, you will need to either add weight to the front to keep it sitting on all three wheels, or stand it on the extended arrester hook. There isn't enough room in the nose for the weight, so I glued BBs behind the cockpit tub with superglue. Fit is generally excellent, except around the nose where the two fuselage areas meet (I needed some putty here) and where the tail section meets the fuselage, where I was left with a large step, which was not easily removed. The tail is a separate piece to account for the smaller tail of the FGA.6 version, also kitted by HobbyBoss in British and Indian markings, so expect to do some serious sanding and puttying around this area to correct this seam. The kit includes eight 60-pound rockets and two drop tanks for ordinance, although the rockets are engineered strangely, and will take some work to look good. I left them off my finished kit. No color information is included for these rockets; they are probably a dark grey, as shown on the box art. The decals are high-quality, printed in register, and settle down nicely into surface details with use of the micro-sol and -set system. The decals are very glossy, however, so for a more realistic look, it's best to seal them with a gloss coat, then give the entire plane a dullcote.
