HO RTR SD45T-2 w/DCC & Sound,SP #9232/1990 Version

Initially I was apprehensive about this product line from Athearn with Econami sound. Sometimes bargain sound is no bargain and usually with limited options, so I was pleasantly surprised when I powered up this engine and immediately noted this is not bargain sound, but very good sound at a bargain price. Functions include bell (there are 6 to chose from) whistle (there are 15 to chose from) prime mover select (2) air compressor (engine driven or shaft driven) headlight, mars light, brake squeal, brake release, dynamic brake, radiator fans, coupler, uncouple and poppets, each with individual volume control. Start up sequence is very good, 645 prime mover is excellent, lights are terrific, dynamic sound is improving and all of it sounds very good. Detailing is quite good with separately applied grabs, guard rails, end rails, cutting levers, air hoses, opening windows, wind screen, windshield wipers, whistle and comes equipped with McHenry scale head, short shank couplers. The trucks are highly detailed as is the fuel tank, sun shades etc, as soon as you install them. That is the difference between Ready to Roll and complete. There is a lot of detail work needed to complete this model so be forewarned if this is not what you want to do. I wouldn’t recommend it as a first build unless you are a quick study. The first generation tunnel motors have see through cooling air intake but the truck drive is readily visible. On this newer version the drive unit has been moved closer to the front of the intake and not nearly as visible. Paint and printing is pretty good too. There is no cab interior but it isn’t full of wiring or mechanisms as found on other manufacturers models. Bottom line, when completed this unit looks and sounds more like more expensive locomotives and is an excellent buy at this price.
