"Leo 451 WWII French Bomber - Plastic Model Airplane Kit - 1/72 Scale Review"
Alex Biever
This 1/72 scale kit comes from a French model company called Heller. Until now I’ve never heard of or even worked on anything Heller related before. Apparently this kit is a reproduction from the one used in the 1960s; which is cool by the way! The pros of this kit are as follows: You have three paint schemes to choose from. One is on the cover on the box from an unknown squadron somewhere in North Africa I believe, next is the Lioré-et-Olivier LeO 451-Flottille 6B (squadron or flotilla in French) Aéronautique Navale de Vichy Oran La Senia (Algérie)-début 1942 (Aeronautical Naval Vichy Oran La Senia Algeria early 1942). Lastly there’s one I did and it’s called Lioré-et-Olivier LeO 451-GB II/12- 2e Escadrille (Squadron) Persan-Beaumont-Mai 1940 (May 1940). The building process even though the instructions/illustrations are not step by step is very good. The decals were wonderful to apply as they did not fold over or crumble at all! The cons of this kit are as follows: The entire instruction booklet and the back of the box are written entirely in French and not English! As an American who doesn’t read, write, or speak French is something I’ve never expected to happen nor prepare for in my modeling career. So I had to make contact with the company via e-mail to see if they have an English version of the instructions. They were very polite in telling me that they did not have any translations for my kit. Thus I was forced to translate everything with the assistance of every known translation website on the internet! It took me a long time to do so but somehow I got it done. Ok the first con in my opinion is subjective but the next one is something different entirely. The painting was way off. Unless you’re not colorblind like I am, the paints needed for the outside stripes don’t match the illustrations at all. My first attempt to do so ended up with desert yellow and bright green stripes. With the aid of my loved ones who are not colorblind, my second attempt to paint the stripes are the following colors; earth brown/green and leather. As a result, it worked out just fine! In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5. Heller if you’re reading this, an English version of the instructions wouldn't hurt for those who can’t read, write, or speak French. Also make sure your paints actually match your illustrations. Otherwise solid work on this kit as a whole!
