Dassault Aviation Rafale C Combat Aircraft

The Revell of Germany 1/48 Dassault Aviation Rafale C is more of a challenge to build than the Hobbyboss Rafale C offering. This is due to the beautiful decal set provided in the kit, so that the Arctic Tiger paint scheme can be replicated. To reproduce this stunning paint scheme a complex masking and decaling process is required. The instructions also provide the color diagram to make the monotone medium grey matt variant option. The ordinance options provide the parts to make GBU 12 bombs, Mica IR missiles, Mica EM missles, and Scalp EG cruise missiles. There are also two external fuel tank types to choose from. Whichever fuel tank style is selected the completed model will have three external fuel tanks installed on it. To enhance the model, I installed photo etch parts from the Eduard, Rafale C exterior 1/48 detail set No. 48986, for the Revell kit. The tires in the kit have weighted wheel detail, which is a nice touch. Instructions are color printed in easy to follow steps. Painting and marking diagrams also include color diagrams to show the builder how to paint the pylons as well as the different types of ordinance that can be used in the build. As with most modern military aircraft, stencil decal installation is a tedious necessity. If the builder opts to build the Arctic Tiger version, then precise kit masking is required. For this build, I painted the entire fuselage and wing assembly with a flat black primer coat before masking off the areas that were to be painted flat white. Decal installation was an involved process requiring Micro set and Micro solve to assist with their application. Painting and installing the decals on the pylons, fuel tanks and ordinance will be time consuming, but will reward the builder when completed. Application of paint by airbrush is highly encouraged. This kit is recommended for intermediate to advanced modelers with decaling, painting and masking skills.
