"A Great British Tank Model"
johncpo41 (www.hobbiesinabarn)
I built this model right out of the box with no additional parts. This kit is a re-release of an older version and fun to have memories of the older release. There are no difficulties in the construction and no flash on the parts and very easy to follow instructions, the chassis is the same as the Sherman tank series so anyone familiar with the suspension on Sherman kits will not have any problems. Each wheel assembly is the repeat of the others just as with the Sherman tank. I painted the model to follow the British practice of breaking up any visible lines in the pattern of their tanks in the North African battles. Yes it is an older Tamiya kit but well worth the experience. As with all Tamiya military kits there is an extensive history of the vehicle in the instruction booklet.

"British M3 Grant tank"

For a kit that appeared very simple (fewer parts than most Tamiya products), this turned out to be one of the more difficult builds. Not only was the hull design somewhat clunky, part fits were not great. In addition, mating the upper hull to the lower section did not fit well. Many 90 degree hull connections were just flat-surface-to-flat-surface connections that do not hold well under pressure. Decent looking model when finished, but several gaps between hull parts are visible.

"nice older molding, lots of potential for modifications"

This is a nice older Tamiya kit. It builds up with no problems. Most of the detail is molded onto the tank itself. I would be comfortable with giving this model to a beginner. With some extra detailing and paint work it will also build into a nice model for the intermediate modeler.

This is a old kit. It is a simple kit and would be great for a starter kit. I drilled out the barrel on the 37mm gun. Added wires to the head set and on the microphone on the tank commander. Also added a wire for the radio antenna. Painted all desert yellow and added weathering to high light the details on the tank. My reference material showed the skirts being olive drab, but I painted them all desert yellow. Pro: Easy instructions and parts went together good. The decals went on smoothly. Decals for two divisions from the battle of El Alamein and battle of Gazala. One figure is included (tank commander). Rubber tracks included. Had no trouble with them. Con: The only problem I had was gaps when adding the side sand skirts. I had to use some filler on the skirts and left some minor gaps. This being a old kit really turned out nice. Looks good next to my Tamiya M3 Lee.
