1942 was the initial year of Allied Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union. Author Mark Lardas performs a systematic analysis and finds for a success attributable to the Luftwaffe, with the assistance of the German Navy. The convoys would continue, with stops and starts, for the rest of the war, but never again would the balance of forces favor the Germans quite like 1942.
This absorbing Air Campaign series book is occasionally repetitious, but the author has clearly done his due diligence. The analysis is very worthwhile, putting paid to a number of persistent myths while crediting the heroic efforts on both sides, in a fight where the environment was as dangerous as the adversaries. The narrative includes an excellent selection of period photographs and modern illustrations, maps, and battle diagrams. Well recommended to students of WW2.
