The Royal Netherlands Navy that fought the Second World War was the result of a series of pre-war compromises between tight budgets and the need to defend both the Netherlands and Dutch possessions in the Far East. Unable to afford the fleet it really needed, the Dutch government experimented with a number of deterrence theories enabling a cheaper navy. The bills came due in May 1940, with a German invasion of the Netherlands and a later Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies.
This concise Osprey New Vanguard series book captures the strategic dialogue and the ships and submarines it produced. The text includes period photographs and modern illustrations and diagrams. Well recommended as shedding light on a largely forgotten aspect of the Second World War.
