"Stop! Spend your money on something better."
fpm.michael@gmail.com (Round Rock, TX)
So here is a fully honest review from someone who has been living with this system for a long time. The good... It is simple... I mean REALY simple. There is little to learn to program a couple of locos and run this system. It only has 1 amp of power so if you are using it on OH that will get you 2 locos before they are starving for power. the 5 amp bolster will kick that up, but the cost makes it a little ridiculous to make the jump. If you are running n scale (That's me) You can run about 3 to 4 locos on the basic setup. It will run some sounds, and it trips the lights just fine. That's it. Its easy and it is basic. The bad... If you are looking for anything beyond simple, this is useless. It claims that it comes with momentum built in, but I have never experienced that. If you turn down the speed, it stops. There is little to no roll through. Some of your locos will not program completely. Again, it is simple. If you have sound, you are not going to get some of the effects built in to work. there is no way to get in and fine tune the DCC programing. It is clunky to hold. The square box gets annoying because you cannot really move around with it. There are both a output and a power wire that has to be plugged in so you are always dealing with one or the other pulling out if you try to move around the room with it. Best is to set it in one spot and leave it alone. Of course you can buy all the extra controllers, network ports and boosters, but you will quickly be spending way more than you would than if you had just bought the Digitrax or Powercab in the first place. And you would actually be able to program something beyond just running the lights and making the thing move forward and backward. Stay away, Buy something better. You will outgrow this controller very fast and be kicking yourself for not getting something more powerful to start with.
