"CAC CA-9 Wirraway 'In training and combat' 1/72 Scale Kit Review"
Alex Biever
This 1/72 scale kit comes from a familiar Czech modeling company called Special Hobby. Over the years I’ve built a wide variety of their kits. Some of them were good while some of them were bad. This one, lands, somewhere in between. The pros for this kit are as follows: You have two paint schemes to choose from. The one I did, which is on the cover of the box, called CAC CA-9 Wirraway, A20-617 (C/N 818), No.86 Sqn. RAAF, Northern Australia, Spring/Summer 1945. This paint scheme is all yellow while the other paint scheme CAC CA-9 Wirraway, A20-637 (C/N 1089), No.4Sqn. RAAF, New Guinea, 1944 is mostly green with white tail surfaces and the front leading edge of the wings. The paint schemes are in color with every view possible making painting and applying decals very easy. The decals were very easy to get off the paper and applied to the kit with no difficulty whatsoever. The cons for this kit are as follows: the assembly for the cockpit section is not exactly clear as to how its supposed to look like. In other words, its not exactly well illustrated and a bit messy to look at. The engine cowling is slightly too small for the engine too. The polyurethan engine cowling piece has the base to remove in front of it instead of the rear. In other words, when I went to remove the cowling piece from the base via sanding, the front of it was messy and there was nothing I could do about it! There were also some instances of gaps that needed to be filled via spackle. In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 4 stars out of 5. Special Hobby if you’re reading this, its not a bad kit by all means; it just has some flaws that need to be fixed such as don’t use the engine cowling as a polyurethan piece. All and all keep up the good work.
