The ship was launched on Feb 21, 1939 and completed for service on Oct 1,1940 by which time World War 2 had already been fought for a year. After a trip to USA, she covered the Lofoten raid (March 1941) and Atlantic convoys before becoming flagship of the British Home Fleet in April 1941. In May 1941 she led the chase of the German Bismarck and saw action for the first time. Through 1941-42 King George V took part in numerous search and escort operations in the Atlantic and in May 1943 she went to the Mediterranean taking part in all the big naval operations covering the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy. . . The Rodney was laid down in December 1922 at the Birkenhead yard of Cammell-Laird & Co. She was launched on the 17th December 1925 and completed in August 1927. . Her armament consisted of nine 16-inch guns in triple turrets all sited forward of her bridge. Twelve 6-inch guns in twin turrets, six 4.7 inch A.A. guns and eight 2 pounder pom-poms. Also two submerged torpedo tubes housed one on each beam forward below the lower deck line. It is interesting to note these torpedos were of the 24.5 inch type common in the Japanese Navy, but unique to the Rodney and Nelson within the Royal Navy as were their 16-inch guns. The British Battleship Prince of Wales was the second ship of the King George V class. Soon after her completion in March 1941, she was involved in the historic hunt for the German battleship Bismarck. In October she was deployed to South-East Asia to fortify the important British post of Singapore. However, her short career of a mere 9 months came to a dramatic end when intercepted by Japanese bombers in what was to be known as the "Battle of Malaya".
