Delivery of the original Superliner 1 cars began in 1979 with the first cars operating on short runs originating in Seattle and Chicago. As more cars arrived, entire Superliner trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns. The Phase IVb is the current operating paint scheme for Amtrak passenger equipment, removing the "SUPERLINER" lettering from the sides of the cars and featuring the new Amtrak logo on the sides of the car.

As more cars arrived, entire Superliner trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns. When originally delivered in the 1970s, Superliner I lounges were referred to as "Lounge Cafe" cars. These were fitted with enormous windows that wrapped upward into the ceiling, providing views of scenery along the train's route, like the dome cars of old.

Baggage cars are a necessary part of any mid-to-long distance train as they provide room to store passenger luggage. Acquired by Amtrak in the 70's, many of Amtrak's heritage baggage cars are older than Amtrak itself - a tribute to their rugged construction and continued utility.

The EMD F40PH is synonymous with the Amtrak era of American passenger trains. Although it has been retired from Amtrak service, it operated for over 20 years. It continues to be the motive power for commuter railroads all over the United States, including the Chicago Metra. Over 400 F40PH locomotives have been manufactured by EMD in various configurations, with the Chicago Metra owning the largest number of the surviving units and operating them to this day, alongside the newer MPI built MP36PH.
