California Mission San Luis Obispo De Tolosa
This is the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:
Originally a humble log chapel, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded fifth in the mission chain by Father Junipero Serra on September 1, 1772. On three occasions, flaming Indian arrows burned its thatched roofs. Determined padres replaced them with roofs of rounded, red clay tiles - introducing a trademark of California architecture. San Luis Obispo's location in the well-watered Valley of the Bears boasted such a large bear population that the Spanish were able to prevent other missions from starvation by sending them bear meat. In the 1930s the mission underwent extensive restoration and now stands in nearly original condition. It serves as a parish church for the city of San Luis Obispo.:
