A somewhat primitive but fun kit to build.
These Glencoe model kits are a bit of an oddity in my model-building lifetime: I'd built military models for years back in the '80s, usually in 1/72 or 1/48 scale, and would probably not have given O-scale civilian model kits like these a second thought. I'm not familiar with Glencoe, apparently an American model company, nor these particular kits, but decided to give a few of these a try after getting into 28mm gaming miniatures again over the last couple years, which are in roughly the same scale as this kit. First impressions are that this kit was surprisingly inexpensive - two model cars for this price, made in the USA, is almost unheard of! And, after opening the kit, I have to assume that it's aimed at model railroad enthusiasts, and probably goes back a ways in history, as the model looks a bit primitive by modern standards - perhaps, I should imagine, a kit design dating back to the '60s? It's a simple kit with only a handful of parts, none of them especially designed to fit together in a precise way - that is, no pegs, slots, tabs, hols, or guides for gluing the bits together, which elevates the difficulty on a kit that would probably be a beginner-level kit if manufactured today. The one-page instruction sheet was pretty easy to follow - just four panels of directions, with no supplemental information about the car or its history, no painting guide, or anything like that: a couple line drawings for guidance and you're left to your own devices. The parts are unnumbered, but easy enough to identify via the directions. The lack of precision fitting means that you'll need to follow the directions carefully to get the right parts in the right places, which for the most part is pretty easy to do, the leaf-springs-and-axles being the tricky parts to get in the right direction and right positions - I needed to file the springs down just a bit where they glue together to ensure the contact area meets closely enough for the glue to work. After this first step, the rest of the model fell together pretty easily, though I did need to look at some reference photos of real examples of the Stutz Bearcat (the model I started with) to make sure that I was putting the horn, stowage, seats, and other loose bits in the right positions. It looks like Model T sedan that shares the box in this two-car kit will be much the same in terms of complexity, detail, fit, and finish. The plastic is a bit brittle, and I snapped a drive shaft accidentally while trying to pick it up, there was hardly any give to the plastic at all! But, this fragile part was pretty easy to replace with a bit of small-diameter styrene rod, which worked better anyway (I recommend havin a stash of assorted styrene rods and sheets of the sort marketed to model railroaders for scratch-building buildings, cars, and the like for this sort of scratch-building of replacement parts! I also used a little scrap of diamond-plate textured sheet styrene for a floor mat in the recessed floorboard of the car to add a little texture there, and a modified 28mm wargaming miniature from a plastic multi-part French Resistance kit by Wargames Atlantic to serve as a driver: the figure is the perfect size, but I had to sculpt some lets to seat him properly in the car.) In the end, it's a somewhat dated kit, but an interesting scale and subject, and these sorts of old-fashioned, simple model kits have a certain amount of charm to them that can't be found in modern precision-fitted, 3D CAD-sculpted model kits, and the build was a lot of fun to do, taking less than 24 hours for me to complete. Its apparent age means that it looks like an easier kit to build than it actually was, but I think that experienced model builders will find it a moderate challenge with a great deal of potential for customization and modification (that Model-T for example was a very popular and useful mass-produced car in its time that saw some military use and might be a fun conversion to a WWI-era military wargaming miniature!) I'm rather taken with these Glencoe O-scale classic car kits, and look forward to building them all, and kinda of wish there were more of them, especially the utilitarian working cars like that Model-T.
