Reviews : Revell-Monogram Huey Hog

This model requires a lot of extra effort to make it look decent. First off, the instructions call for building the helicopter essentially from the top down causing the propeller blades to be constructed in one of the first steps. This means there is nothing to support the model while it is being constructed and you have to contend with helicopter blades perpetually getting in the way while working on it. I wish this was constructed from the bottom up and I would advise attaching the landing skids as soon as possible. I would also recommend attaching the tail rotor last as it will certainly break during construction. Helicopter modes, and Revel models in particular, are notorious for having parts that's do not fit together flush. This one is no exception. Most pieces of the cockpit are VERY difficult to assemble due to poor fitting. This requires a great deal of sanding and contour putty to correct. Additionally, the many clear plastic windows complicate the matter as they cannot be painted, sanded, or contoured over. Originally, I painted this model Olive Drab but was very disappointed. It looked cartoonish and unprofessional. While constructing this model I became very frustrated with it and decided to use it to practice some airbrushing techniques rather than finish it. In doing so I found that painting it Dark Green instead of Olive Drab made it look a lot better so I decided to salvage the model. I cleaned the windows as much as I could but they are still cloudy. If you really want a Huey Hog, as I did, to add to your collection, be prepared to put a lot more work into this than you might think. Use dark green rather olive drab, and I would recommend leaving the side doors open so you get a better view of the inside. Also, you might want to skip around the steps in the instructions in order to prevent breakage during construction and to make the model more stable.

The good: For its age, the molding and shape is generally good, and the details are adequately represented. With some work, a very nice model can be made, and aftermarket decals, photoetch and resin parts allow the modeler to make an accurate masterpiece. The bad: The kit is sold as a C model, but it's really sort of a B/C model, a result of Monogram selling it as an early B model Huey medevac in the early '60s. As larger D models were developed in the mid '60s, the B models were converted to gunships, but since they were underpowered for the armament that was attached, the C model was developed from it pending the arrival of the AH-1 HueyCobra, with a larger chord 540 rotor system, larger chord vertical fin and synchronized elevators and upgraded 1100 shp engine. In response to this evolution Monogram decided they wanted to model the C gunship, and they replaced the B model rotor, but did not change the vertical fin or sync elevators, leaving the model some B, some C. The ugly: Assembly of the unusual parts breakdown is a real challenge. There are two fuselage halves, but the roof of the cabin is a separate piece. Getting the fuselage together requires patience, but can be accomplished, and that is the biggest hurdle, and requires patience. Also, adding a little weight to the nose in the form of a couple of 1/4 oz fishing sinkers or split shot keeps the Huey level on its skids. IIRC that is not mentioned in the instructions. Overall, this kit takes patience, and some extra bucks to make it a really accurate model, but built out of the box with some patience gives the modeler a creditable nearly-Charlie model Huey, For an experienced modeler looking for a bit of a challenge, this can be a good choice. For a first kit, the modeler should look elsewhere.

Well this is an old kit and it shows. MY problems started with the fuselage halves they were very badly warped especially in the tail boom. I needed to use clothes pins to hold it together while the glue set. The instructions told me to put the pilots in the wrong seats 1 pilot has his hands on the stick the other is reaching for the control panel if you put them in wrong the pilot will try to reach out the closed door window. The other major hassle is the nose it is seperate from the fuselage and will not fit well without a lot of trying to make it fit. The interior of the copter doesn't set well either. All the exterior slots for the landing skids and the gun mounts are too large for the parts and will not look good afterward until filled with puddy. the weapons go on easy once the gun mounts are set in place. The 40mm on the nose will swivel up and down and goes on well. The other annoyance was the windows especially the cockpit roof ones don't fit well at all. In the end I did tame this beast but it required a lot of paint and puddy to cover all the defects. once done it does look good at a distance.

This is a good model for beginners. It is a simple and fun kit. The parts are dark olive drab and the kit contains 2 pilot figures. Part fit is not all that great and some of the pieces require sanding while some of the seams need some putty to fill-in the gaps. The biggest fit problems were with the clear pieces; you got to do a lot of dry fitting before gluing these pieces. On the bottom you will have several holes and gaps as there are no parts to cover them. The seats require some work as they lack detail; you got to add some cushions and other parts to make them look a little more realistic. I was happy with the decals, they went on perfectly with a little help from Micro Set and Micro Sol decal solution. All and all not a bad kit considering the price.

This was my first 1:48 scale helicopter. It was not hard, but still offered a challenge. The rotors were very fragile and needed patience for painting & gluing. The landing gear or the feet of the a/c were also fragile and had to be glued on right. The interior is nice and there are many details to do such as painting pilot and co-pilot, machine guns, ammo, grenade launcher...Do take your time, I learned that helicopters are harder than WWII monoplanes. The fuselage of the body was a little mismatched and had to be sanded down and adjusted to get it straight, and the interior cockpit didn't fit 100% into the body. Overall nice package, next on my list is apache and hind

Although a rather dated offering from Revell, this model does build up into a nice representation of the UH-1B/C Huey Gunship wich serve so well in the early days of the Vietnam war prior to the arrival of the AH-1 cobra. The decal sheet offers a interesting subject. My kit had only minor flash,maybe from an earlier production run. But none the less the modle goes toghether quite nicely and offers a nice weapons load.All in all still a nice model which should not be difficult to build for any modeler.And you can not beat the price. Recommended.

For the age of this kit, it is pretty nice. Some of the pieces were warped and there was plenty of flash to clean up, but that is to be expected. The instructions were easy to follow and after lots of clean up the parts went together pretty well. Some of the pieces are pretty fragile. I would recommend this kit to anyone, as it can be a nice easy build, but it is also pretty cheap allowing modelers to practice new techniques without breaking the bank.

like the larger monogram huey this one's molds were shipped off to another country and poorly done. the interior parts fit well but the fuselage halves were so poorly molded I could see light through them and the glue just finished them off. on the up side 12 dollars for decals and a set of guns I could put on a different kit weren't bad.

It has been quite a while since I built my Huey model, but I remember that it was not hard to build. To my memory, the directions only had seven steps. Overall it was another very good Revell model kit. For making a Vietnam War helicopter at a cheap price, this kit is the way to go. Note: the plastic is molded in a brown/olive color.

I like this Huey kit. I wanted a Vietnam war Huey model and that is what I got. It only comes with 1 or 2 USMC decals though, nothing for the Army or other allied nations. The quality is good with little flash and good details. I am happy with it. I will hang the finished model from my ceiling.

Very old outdated model. Parts don't fit together properly. Ejection pin marks in all the wrong places. Warped parts. Inaccurate raised panel lines in some places where they should be recessed. I would recommend this model only to practice airbrushing and weathering since it is cheap.

It was a Fun first build to do, but the quality of the parts and the way that they fit, is sub par compared to my P-47 and my B-25 that I got later, But still it was a fun build and has a lot of detail. The issues were probably my fault though :).

An older design, this model is made as well as some of the newer models, but with a small bit of effort, one can still make a realistic Huey Hog. Small parts may fall off sprue, so save everything in that box.

Not hard, but some experience would help. Was bent( tail rotor) when I got it, so I had to fix it. Comes with Marines decal, but I left them off. Most of detail comes from interior and pilots.

This is a very, very well made kit. It accurately represents a Bell UH-1C helicopter. It has a great price and was a fun build. Recommended for all skill levels.

Very detailed, brilliant model - looks really clean when finished. Realistic parts and water-slide decals. Detailed cockpit.

This bird is nicer than many other helicopter,s but she's got serious powerful sister called ah-1cobra
