Hopefully this is a kit that gets reissued in as many different ways possible because I will never get enough of it!!
A well detailed kit, one of their best
I bought this kit some time ago and decided to look it over for planning purposes and found it to be a really well detailed kit. The 409 stump puller is well represented with intake and exhaust options and the interior is molded in beautiful high relief with individual side panels. There is separate windshield and backlight and full side glass panels too. You can build it stock as a dog-dish equipped, radio delete COPO Beach Boys dream car. You may also be inclined to use the optional parts to build the Joe Gardiner Northwind A/S drag car but you will need to provide your own chrome reverse wheels because they are not in the kit, at least not in the version I have. The optional 5 spoke mags they have provided are not plated and are not appropriate for the car pictured on the box. The plain, unplated steel wheels in the kit don't look like reversed rims either but the hub caps seem to be accurate. It is a great kit though, so don't let the wheel thing stop you. If you are a kit basher, you can create a very sharp street custom, my preference for this bubble-top bow tie.
Bravo AMT!
This is a fantastic offering from AMT. The is very little flash and the body is especially nice. The fit of the widows, interior tub, and chassis are top notch. The 409 engine has really nice detail; the 2 piece headers and exhaust dumps fit well. There are 3 intake options and 3 options for air cleaners. ALL of the parts are beautifully molded. The front and rear suspensions are well done. I especially liked the angled front lower control arms for the nose up attitude of the early Super Stockers and the detailed 3-link rear with Panhard bar. I built mine as a Rex White NASCAR racer. Removing the trim, badging, door handles, and wipers was the most difficult part of the build. The topmost character line was recreated using 0.030 square styrene and replacement door handles were whittled from 0.040 x 0.250 styrene. To lower the front ride height, I used the front lower control arms and spindles from the (also excellent) AMT 61 Impala SS. In addition, the rear springs were cut down by ca. 1/8 inch. The 6 lug wheels were from the AMT 69 Torino, and were narrowed for this build. The excellent decals were from Gofer Racing.
