"A brief introduction to George S. Patton"
hhpodesta
For those that would love to have a first read on Patton's life, achievements and relationships with other high commanding officers, this book is perfect. Patton's life and military career from 1885 to 1941 is skimmed over at high speed in the first eight pages. Patton's Second World War career is covered in about 30 pages, with the emphasis in his campaigns in France and Germany in 1944-45. The author applauds Patton's oft-neglected diplomatic skills with the French in North Africa, but notes his problematic behavior in Sicily that led to his being sidelined for nearly a year. The backbone of this account is Patton's contributions in Northwest Europe, beginning with the Cobra breakout, drive to the Seine, relief of Bastogne and crossing of the Rhine. This account fails to give a comprehensive assessment of Patton's weaknesses and strengths as a general, nor does it give much detail on his ability to make tactical decisions. But, to be fair to this author, he was working under very tight page constraints in this new series and Osprey is probably trying to pack too much into a 64-page format. The book includes some great original art as well as some very nice photos and maps. This is an informative and enjoyable introductory book to G. S. Patton.
