Wirbelwind Quad 20mm Tank

This is a 1:35 Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind Quad 20mm Tank from Academy Plastics. It's for experienced modelers.

The Panzer IV, in its many versions, was one of the most widely used German tanks of WWII. The Panzer IV was powered by a Maybach V-12 engine which provided over 300hp and was connected to the drive sprockets via a 6-speed transmission. The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind was a Panzer IV chassis with a new turret containing a 4 barrel anti-aircraft gun. The Wirbelwind was used to protect infantry and vehicles against air attack.

"Good & Bad"

This was my first build of a Academy kit. I was not happy with a couple important items. PRO'S: Good detail except road wheel's. Parts fit good except the shield around the 20mm guns. Decals ok. CON'S: The instruction sheet was poor. Felt like I was looking at one from the 60's. Painting detail of parts was horrible. No paint colors recommended for the figures. The road wheels were round not flat. I didn't even bother to try and get them flat. I would not have any wheel left if I tried. Large gap between the top deck and the rear panel. I had to add scrape piece of plastic to fill the 1/8 gap. The shield around the 20 mm guns gave me a lot of trouble to fit together. I left out the 3 figures that went inside the shield do to the fact I could not get them to fit inside and complete fitting the shield together. The kit looks good except for the wheels. I would not recommend it for a beginner do to the difficulty of the gap and the shield.

Never, never,NEVER!!!buy academy models. Instruction graphics are horrible. Hulls never fit. Just an all around bad model.

"An Addition of Academy Tanks"

This model is one of several Academy models of the German MklV series chassis tanks, all different. The model is slightly out of alignment for some reason with the gun barrels in the turret not matching the slots in the turret shell. I had to sand out the slots which was very frustrating. That was the only big issue with my kit. I painted the well crafted figures to match a camouflage pattern on the tank which seemed to make sense. They were better than expected in quality. This tank along with any others from Academy would be an excellent way to save expenses and collect an impressive group of armor. I highly recommend this model to anyone.

"Old copy of Tamiya kit"

This kit is a direct copy of the old 1970s Tamiya kit. It even has the holes in the bottom for the motor. The fit was just OK, but it lacks fine details. The figures are good and offer a action poise of firing the guns with the commander directing them. The road wheels were out of round, so I had to chuck them into a motor tool and try to sand them round.
