"Stalingrad, the fights in the city."
hhpodesta
In the second half of 1942, German forces had reached the outskirts of the Soviet industrial city of Stalingrad, as part of a larger offensive planned to take over the very important Soviet oil refineries in the Caucasus. The German Sixth Army was ordered to take Stalingrad itself for its propaganda value. The Germans were however unprepared for either urban combat or the Soviet willingness to expend lives to hold the city. This volume (the 2nd) covers the September-November 1942 battles, it is a very detailed account of the urban combat in the city as the Germans attempted to capture Stalingrad and the Soviets attempted to defend it, both at all costs. The maps and illustrations are plentiful and really well done as are the photos. Very well recommended to students of the conflict.
