I’ve been working on a larger wargaming project for the American Civil War, and these are my thoughts on the utility and usability of this set. I’ll start with a short explanation of my point of view. I have a few criteria which I use to judge the value of a set for my purposes: it must be aesthetically pleasing to me, it needs to be sturdy enough to put up with the normal stresses of play and careful storage, and it must be inexpensive enough that I don’t have an attack when my three year old and one year old get into things.
The breakdown: 13 figures in 12 poses, 2 horses, 2 Napoleon 12lbers, 1 limber and full team of horses
Though this is marked as “Union Artillery,†it could be used for either side, and it is fantastic.
The guns are a specific, identifiable, and widespread model for both armies. The crews, 8 individuals with unique poses, are also excellent. They are a bit warmly dressed, but that is a minor concern for my purposes.
There is a mounted officer and two outriders with artillery guidons, and two fellows to sit on the limber who might appear more at home on a supply wagon. The limber itself is excellent, and the full team is wonderful.
There are no other poses here: the set does exactly what it set out to do and nothing more. The execution is excellent. They take paint very well and look great. They are also fairly sturdy.
I would call this set a “must have†for anyone building a 1/72 ACW army. After painting and basing, it fits in well with the following sets I use: Italeri Set 6012 “Union Infantry with Zouaves,†Italeri Set 6013 “Union Cavalry,†Italeri Set 6014 “Confederate Infantry,†Italeri Set 6011 “Confederate Cavalry,†IMEX Set 505 “Union Infantry,†IMEX Set 503 “Union Cavalry,†IMEX Set 501 “Union Artillery,†IMEX Set 506 “Confederate Infantry,†IMEX Set 504 “Confederate Cavalry,†and IMEX Set 502 “Confederate Artilleryâ€
