"The hazardous and unique JG-400 and the incredible Me-163."
hhpodesta
Flying in a rocket powered vehicle is, up to our days, one of the most hazardous things a human can do. Adding to that, imagine you have 30 minutes to take off and, with a meteoric rate of climb, reach a huge compact group of B-17 Flying Fortresses, that will shoot you with everything they have, then passing between them at very high speed, fire to them with your two 30mm cannons, and when your fuel runs out, glide your Me-163, to base or near and try to reach ground with a landing skid...well that was a typical day at work, for the pilots of JG-400. This book is about the JG-400, an air wing closely linked to the revolutionary Me-163 Komet rocket-plane, so the book is about both the Air Wing and its incredible interceptor. This air wing was the only military aviation unit of any size in history, to actively use rocket-powered combat aircraft in wartime. Because of the Me-163 short range, the units operated as point defense near strategic objectives. This book has much more details about the development, operations and people/pilots involved, than any other of this series, especially because of the short lived of this wing (from Feb 1944 - Apr 1945). The book comes with superb color plates and many appendices. This unit - Spoiler alert - obtained very poor results in combat, but its history is so interesting and dramatic that's worth the reading. I definitely recommend it.
