The Boeing 737 was designed as a short range passenger airliner to compete against the British BAC 1-11 and the Douglas DC-9. Featuring a twin engine arrangement with one turbojet mounted under each wing, the 737 also borrowed many components fromthe earlier 727 which has 3 tail mounted engines.
