"AFV Club 1/35 Sturmmörser Tiger kit # 35103 with AFV Club Sturmmörser Interior Detail Kit # 35S40"
CaptainA (Indiana)
The Sturmmörser Tiger is a really interesting kit of a relatively unknown Tiger variant. The AFV kit is a nice representation of this subject. If you can get the Interior Detail kit, you will be in for an interesting build. For a lot of armor builders, building the inside of a kit is unheard of. Why spend precious building time working on the part of a tank you can never see? Most modelers who build the interiors will say “I know it is in there.” But more realistically, a judge with a flashlight can see through the hatches. And if there is nothing there, it can be a glaring error. In the case of the Sturmmörser, there is a very large hatch that can be opened to put the humongous shells in. This kit cries out for the interior more than most. The interior kit fits very nicely into the Sturmmörser since they are both from AFV Club. So, on to the build. Step one through four of the main kit and one through five of the interior kit is the building of the chassis and much of the interior that goes therein. Step five of the main kit is the building of the Tail plate and exhausts. In step six through eight of the interior kit you build the floor of the fighting compartment. Steps six through eight of the main kit and nine through eleven of the interior kit you will be building and attaching the parts for the upper hull assembly. Steps nine through eleven of the main kit builds up the engine compartment plates and grates. There are some small fragile parts here, but this assembly doesn’t get attached until much later. Steps six through twelve, thirteen, and fourteen of the main kit are the building of the main gun ball mount. Now we move on to steps fifteen through twenty-two of the main kit and steps twelve through eighteen of the interior kit, which is the building of the upper superstructure. Steps nineteen and twenty of the interior kit add more parts to the interior. Steps nineteen through twenty-four of the main kit are the last parts-four of the main kit are the last parts to be added before joining the upper and lower superstructure. Then there are just a few exterior parts to be added before the kit is ready for painting. The kit comes with photo-etch and some photo-etch is used to represent the rifling in the main gun as well. This is a clever use of photo-etch. Overall, these two kits build up into a really nice Sturmmörser. Overall, fit is excellent between the two kits. The moldings are crisp and I had zero flash and almost no cleanup of the parts. These kits do have many small parts that will give most modelers a bit of apprehension. But the results I got are really amazing. I left the upper panel unglued on the upper superstructure so the interior shows very clearly. The instructions between the two kits will cause some confusion. I think that is the only thing to complain about. It might be smart for AFV Club to include one set of instructions int the interior kit to clear things up a bit. But overall, I think these kits are good for somebody looking for a first interior build. Even the Sturmmörser kit by itself is an amazing build. Would I recommend this kit to a friend? Yes.
