Better Keep Some Binoculars Handy
By jamiekitchen April 19, 2013
I used this motor in a scratch built minimum diameter 29 mm rocket. The body tube was phenolic and the nosecone was a solid urethane conical design from PM. I am glad I fiber glassed the fins because the rocket just about went transonic. Incredibly one of the observers picked it up in a pair of wide field binoculars she uses for birding just before ejection and followed it down. Otherwise it would be just a memory I am sure as none of us were prepared for how fast this thing left the pad. Recommendations: Use a bright streamer and paint your rocket a bright color that stands out against the sky. Position somebody at least 100 yards from the pad with a good set of wide field binoculars so they can track it. The tracking smoke during coast is great, but the rocket will go off like a mortar and be over a mile up before you know it so be prepared. Jamie

G80 13T CLUSTER!!
By zerocabo January 2, 2014
I recently used the G80-13T in a four cluster scratch built rocket (52 tall, 4 dia.) and will tell you HOLY $H!@!!! We lost track of the rocket almost instantly! It left the pad and went on a slight angle and I'm thinking it may have gone supersonic! we did recover the rocket a little over a mile from the launch site! :) The sound was INCREDIBLE! It sounded like an F-15 flyby!! I will be adding the altimeter two as well as a sounding beacon to help locate the rocket for the next launch. I had the rocket equipped with two, 30 parachutes and somehow, one was lost during recovery, so maybe going to use bigger chute(s) next time! one fin broke during flight as the ground impact can only be seen evident on only one of the other fins. thank goodness I glassed them on! on a side note, we did have the CHP helicopter come and circle our camp/launchsite after the launch! LoL!
