"Excellent Moon Rocket Model"
johncpo41 (www.hobbiesinabarn)
I started with Estes Rockets back in the early days when you had to order out of a old catalog. I built the Big Bertha, and many more to learn physics, chemistry and above all safety. My younger brother formed a sanctioned model rocket club in Rochester, NY and as far as I know it is still functioning, all because of this model rocket. As I remember this was the greatest of all model rockets an it took more sand paper and balsa filler to work thorough the fins and body tubes than we could afford but we got through it. An amazing kit and well worth the effort but not recommended for novice builders but for highly experienced builders.

"A Classic"

I built and flew this model many years ago. It was $20 at the time if that gives you any idea. I was never very happy with the job I did building it so I wanted to give it another shot. This model is not always available so I grabbed it when I saw Hobbylinc had it. If your looking at this you likely know that this is a flying model rocket that is largely cardboard tubes with some detail plastic parts as opposed to a plastic model representation of a Saturn V available from Revell or Airfix for example. If you're used to plastic models, this can be a bit different as you're dealing largely with cardboard, balsa, white glue/epoxy, and instructions that look like they're from the 1960's. Still, it can be made into an excellent representation of this historic rocket. And, you can fly it - if you're willing to risk all that hard work. It seems that this kit only gets re-released every so often. When it's not in circulation, the price goes up significantly on eBay. If you're thinking about getting one, might be a good idea to pull the trigger as you never know how long it will be available.

"Beautiful model if you take your time"

This is by far the most difficult model I have built. It took me around seven months to complete it. I dont know what skill level 5 is, and i dont want to know if this is a 4. It was really fun to build and has turned out to be a very realistic model. I still havent launched it but thought a would share a few tips and notes for building: (1) do a search for Estes Saturn V model rocket build instructions. There are few really good step-by-step guides others have posted with excellent tips for building. (2) Go slow and be sure each step is correct. Use good masking tape like Tamiya to get nice straight lines (3) My kit came with the wrong engine depth spacer. I just happened to have the correct one from another rocket but you may need to contact Estes or buy/built one so it is correct for an E engine. (4) The listing and directions state a 3/16 launch rod but the included launch lugs are 1/4. You will need a 1/4 launch rod! (5) My Saturn V ended up being around 375 grams but I like to make sure all the tube spirals are filled in and it was well primed and painted which adds extra weight. (6) How could Estes possibly recommend a D12 engine? I cant imagine it going more than 75ft? use at least an E9 or E20 composite.

"Definitely a must build for builders."

Take your time on this one. Very well done kit. Detailed plastic wraps. Very challenging to build and paint.
