"Great Set!!!!!!!"

This was a very nice set in all respects. It was well made, the instructions were very clear, and it was an enjoyable build. The set gives you two options of the plane to build. I chose the American version, the other being a Free French plane I hadn't heard of prior to purchasing this set. The kit includes the parts to make the plane with different pieces for your respective choice (French or American), such as the cowling and the type of rear-facing machine gun, as said in another review. I really enjoyed the figures, as they made a great addition to the set. This was my first time painting figures, and also my first time with water slide decals. Those aspects of the kit made it very......interesting. Now on to the pros and cons. The pros of this set would be that it is accurate as far as I am concerned, as I do not have a lot of knowledge in the design of Pacific Theater planes, it is easy to build, the instructions are clear, well designed and molded, as I saw no flash at all. There were definitely more pros than cons, but one thing that at least I took negatively was the incredible amount of decals to put on, and how small and difficult those decals were. This set was very well exemplified in descriptions on many websites, so there was no other information I would have liked to know. Overall, this set was a very good representation of the Douglas Dauntless SBD, and I really had fun with it.

"Rivets!"

This is an old-school Airfix kit, from the days when huge rivets were in style. There's not much detail in the cockpit -- just a little decal for the instrument panel -- and none in the wheel wells. It's a basic kit, and the age of the mold has resulted in some flash. It's certainly not one of the crisp new beauties that Airfix is producing these days. However, it's not all bad. The canopy comes in several pieces, allowing you to pose it open. This allows you to show off the two-man crew, who are actually pretty good-looking. The cowling and radial engine don't look half bad either, with the right paints and some weathering thrown on. The decals are new, and high-quality, including some stencils. Your choices are an early-war Dauntless from the Battle of Midway or a Free French aircraft in olive drab. There's certainly room for a better SBD Dauntless at an affordable price, but this venerable Airfix model still has a few years of life left in it.

"Decent SBD"

This is one of the few Pacific theater US aircraft that Airfix has produced, and it's a decent model - pieces fit together just fine, instructions are clear, overall look of the model is nice and clean. The thing that puzzled me was the paint schemes: you can do a US Navy SBD-3 'B-11' of VB-6 onboard USS Enterprise, Midway, June 1942 - this one is normal, the kind of thing you would expect. The other is a Free French A-24B No 254541 of Groupe de Chasse-Bombardement 1/18 'Vendee' in the South of France, 1944. I didn't even know that the Free French used SBDs. This works great for people like my brother, who love modelling really obscure, really-not-well-known themes, but I would have liked a choice of a Midway or Coral Sea aircraft, maybe Wake Island or something. This choice of a Free French decal scheme cannot really be complained about; it's definitely different, which is good, its just not what I would choose. What I liked about this set was that there were a lot of choices: depending on whether you did the US or French version, you use a single or double rear-mount machine gun, two types of cowlings, etc.

Markings

  • One decal sheet with markings for 2 versions
  • 1) Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless VB-6, USS Enterprise (CV-6), Midway Atoll, June 1942
  • 2) Douglas A24B Dauntless (SBD-5) Groupe de Chasses-Bombardement 1/18 "Vendee", South France, 1944
