"Fun model, interesting topic"

The Revell F-86 kit is molded in a dull aluminum color so if you were new to the hobby and wanted to put the kit together, paint accessory pieces, and slap on the decals you could have a nice kit. Like most Revell (or Monogram) models, they are reasonably priced, have good detail, and are good at honing your skills to become a better modeler. With the F-86, the kit fits together well, but choosing the options (like leaving the gun bay open or the airspeed breaks) will enhance your decaling skills. I selected Tamiya AS-12 spray paint and highlighted with tones slightly off that color for gear doors, speed breaks, and other various areas with the goal of breaking up the one color. Assembly went well until I got to the canopy. Be careful to dry fit (as you should with all parts) to ensure you have good alignment. I actually had to slightly bend the canopy out a bit to get the fit and alignment correct. As for the decals, they apply well and with some Micro Sol look great, but if you chose to keep the doors open, study the instructions well for placement. It might be wise if you put on the fuselage national emblem first and then work forward and aft from that point. If you want an accurate representation of the Black Angel you have to paint the nose red and realize that the decals are angled aft. I like to research my topics before I build them and found most F-86's had yellow striping not only on the fuselage, but on the wings as well. Revell does not include the yellow wing markings so I pre-painted the yellow and applied the black stripes (included on the decal sheet). Overall this is a nice kit, represents the subject well, and will help you build on your modeling skills.

"Average and Challenging"

This kit represents one of the finest U.S. fighters of the 1950s but the kit doesn't do it justice as it is older, with fit problems, flash and decal alignment as I had lots of trouble with all the issues noted. A great amount of patience is needed to assemble and detail this model. When I completed most of the subassemblies and put them together I needed to sand down the parts to properly fit and the time is not spent well that way. At least the decals did not disintegrate as many sheets do after time so that wasn't an issue. I would recommend this kit only to experienced model builders.

"Decent kit and easy to build"

A decent kit for the price. The detail was OK. It did the job. Simple to build.

"F-86E Sabre Paper Tiger"

This kit was first issued around 1977 under the Monogram label. This re-issue had some flash but nothing a sanding stick and X-acto knife can't take care of. The flaps and air brakes can be positioned as you like and the canopy can be open or closed. The jet intake doesn't go all the way back so I made an intake cover and the tailpipe is also short, so I made a cover for it as well. The cockpit is good for the era this kit was designed in, as is the gun bay. I didn't use the kit decals from this issue, instead I used a set from an original issue of this kit to mark it as Harold Fischer's Paper Tiger and I used a set of theatre stripes from an old Eagle Cals sheet. Most Korean war F-86's were 'E' models with the 6-3 wing and this is what the kit most closely represents. My build took about a week and it turned out very well but if your looking for a higher level of detail or ease of build then the Hasegawa or Academy kits will suit you. If you are like me, trying to recapture a moment from 45 years ago, then the tribulations of building an equally old model won't matter.
