"Hasegawa 1/48 F-86F-30 Sabre USAF #07213 Kit/Build Review"
Christopher A. Wing (Fresno, CA)
The Hasegawa 1/48 F-86F-30 USAF #7213 model kit was initially released in 1996 and is currently still in production. This kit is an excellent value for its relatively low price point. After viewing modelers build the Academy 1/48 F-86F-30 kit on YouTube, I decided to purchase and build the Hasegawa 1/48 version instead. The Academy kit appeared to be the more detailed version of this aircraft to build as it had a detailed gun compartment and it also had parts to build the internal jet engine. As I only intended to open the fuselage airbrake compartments and landing gear bays, I did not need to have a detailed exposed gun compartment. In addition, I reasoned that an internal jet engine was not necessary as it was going to be hidden away in the fuselage after final assembly. I also observed builders, of the Academy 1/48 F-86F-30 kit, having to do quite a bit of fitting, filling and rescribing. With the Hasegawa 1/48 F-86F-30 Sabre kit very little seam filling was necessary. Wing root gap was non-existent. I only had to file the headlamp panel part that was installed front of the nose gear opening, to get a precise fit. I had to fill only one narrow gap with superglue between the lower wing part and the rear fuselage. Please note that the instructions recommend that 5 grams of ballast be installed above the intake tube in front of the cockpit assembly. I used round lead fishing weights for this purpose. The kit comes with parts to make a full-length intake duct and exhaust pipe. A detailed pilot figure is provided in the kit, negating the need to install aftermarket seat harness/belt parts. The airbrakes on either side of the fuselage can be positioned open or closed. I decided to open them up to expose the compartment detail inside of them. The only aftermarket accessory used in this build was a Montex Mini Mask for the Hasegawa F-86F Sabre, Item Code SM 48101. Recessed Panel line detail on the kit parts is excellent. Although not extensive, some rivet detail is also present. Other than the exceptions described previously, parts fit is precise. Tabs on the rear horizontal tail planes are angled to ensure a precise dihedral orientation upon their installation. Landing gear assembly is straight forward, and landing gear component parts fitment is precise. In addition to twin external fuel tanks, the kit comes with two sidewinder missiles with their underwing pylons. I opted out of their installation as I wanted to make a Korean War era fighter which I believe occurred prior to the advent of sidewinder missiles. This kit comes with two colorful aircraft marking options and a comprehensive set of stencil markings. Option 1 is for the 21st Fighter Bomber Wing Commander's aircraft and option 2 is for the 8th Fighter Bomber Wing Commander's aircraft. I decided to go for option 1 as most builders of the F-86F-30 seem to prefer the Yellow banded paint scheme as used for option 2. To paint the cockpit and seat I used Vallejo Model Air 71.277 Dark Gull Gray and Anita's Acrylic black 302278 for the instrument panel and interior cowling, For painting of the exterior surfaces of the fuselage and wings, I initially primed the aircraft with Anita's Acrylic 302278 black paint. As the instructions called out for silver as the base coat, I used Ceramcoat Metallic Silver acrylic paint 02603. I hand painted the tires using Apple Barrel 21490E Pavement. I also hand painted the exterior exhaust nozzle with Model Master Metalizer Lacquer, Burnt Iron. The gunport panels on the aircraft were masked off and airbrush painted with Hand Made Modern Metallic Steel Acrylic paint. Following airbrush and handbrush painting, a protective coat of Johnson's Floor Wax (i.e. Future) was applied. Next, after at least 8 hours of drying time, decal application could proceed. For airbrush tasks I use an Iwata HPC airbrush with a 0.3mm needle at 20 psi. I found that the decals supplied in the kit were thick in contour. Therefore, copious amounts of Micro Set and Micro Sol were necessary to get the decals to conform to the various contours and angled surfaces of this aircraft. The decal application process was tedious and time consuming. Careful attention to the instructions was necessary to ensure accurate placement of the stencil decal markings. I used precision tweezers, toothpicks, cotton swabs, paper towels, warm tap water, micro scissors and a magnifying glass for decal application. Following decal application, another protective layer of Johnson's Floorwax was airbrushed on the model. After allowing this layer to dry, I panel washed the model using Tamiya Black Panel Liner. The excess Panel Liner was then removed using Testor's Enamel Thinner. Following this final detailing process, landing gear, airbrakes and drop tanks were installed. The last stage of the build was the removal of the Montex canopy masks, which provided excellent results. Although entry level modelers could possibly obtain successful completion of this kit, intermediate to advanced fine scale modelers with airbrush painting and decal application skills are more likely to achieve excellent results.

"Easy to build F-86F-30"

Nice priced and easy build for a F-86, Hasegawa quality. The internal intake trunking and simulated jet engine are nice touchs. The cockpitis a relatively simple affair and the pilot is a bit too plain. Overall the kitis fun and easy for beginners.

Good kit with many details to build a nice model. Hasagawa models are always fun to build and add to collection
