Dornier Do335 Arrow

This was my first model after many years of inactivity. I am finally mature enough to take my time and create a realistic model with care and attention to detail. To keep things interesting, I am trying to do a series of models, all experimental Axis aircraft of WW2, in 1/48th scale. The Revell Do335 was a great place to start and I enjoyed building this model very much. The 335 was the fastest propeller driven aircraft of the war, although the Germans were overrun before it could be used to affect the course of the conflict. This model comes with a few different build variations including the standard single seat fighter and an experimental 2-seat night fighter/trainer variant. The kit includes both German Luftwaffe decals and British and American markings used when the fighter was captured and brought to the US and UK for flight testing and evaluation. This gives lots of flexibility to the builder to choose what they want to build to fit their collection (plus the extra unused decals can be used on other projects). One downside to this kit are raised panel lines, although I found that after the model was painted in the indicated camo scheme and weathered it was hardly noticeable. The kit also features molded engine compartments that can be displayed with the engine cowlings in the open position. I chose to do this but also added some pieces of painted/weathered electrical wiring to the engine compartments and experimented until it looked realistic. That was the thing with this model: I was not afraid to experiment and possibly make a mistake or ruin the model as it is relatively inexpensive and readily available, plus I needed the experience since I have been out of the hobby for so long. I chose the 2-seat night fighter variant for my build as it just looks so weird and would be a good conversation starter. I highly recommend this kit and the manufacturer - Revell is like an old pickup truck, it may not be expensive or flashy but it always gets the job done.
