A6M2 Type 21 Zero Fighter

In the summer of 1937 Japan started action against China and threw into the front a great number of the newest planes which Japan had created with their original ideas and technique. Concerning fighters in particular, Japan had abandoned biplane type which was counted as the common sense of the then world and already employed the Type 96 Carrier Fighter (96 Kansen) that Japan had produced on the basis of many pieces of new technique and ideas such as all-metal, internally braced low wing monoplane design and the engine cowling designed to reduce air resistance. 96 Kansens always successfully engaed with I-15 and I-16 fighters and SB-2 bombers of Russian make as well as Gladiator fighters of British make. The 96 Kansen appeared as a fighter having a speed as high as 450 km/h and superior maneuverability at the time when conventional fighters of Japan and other nations of the world had a maximum speed of 350 km/h, winning admiration in Japan and abroad. This overthrew the deepfooted view that foreign planes were superior to those of Japan. After the appearance of the 96 Kansen, the modernization of Japan's aircraft industry was rapidly promoted and original planes came to be born.

"Decent"

For 11 Dollars it fills the purpose, I don't think I'll ever re-purchase this model again considering the amount of time I've spent on it. I like the intentions behind it but I feel as if it could have been done better, the wings were hard to seal off, and the probe wouldn't fit into the left wing.

"Good overall"
Dirtdiver06 (markdloggins@bellsouth.net)
Pretty good model for the price. I had similar experiences as the previous reviewers. It took a lot of work to get the wings and body matched up with no gap and several pieces had to be finessed in order to get a proper fit. I also found the decals to be overly brittle and easy to damage when positioning, but if you're careful it's no big deal. All of that said, it was still an overall good kit for the money and was enjoyable to build

"Decal Issues Ruined Build Enjoyment"

Didnt have any real issues with this models construction, wings took a bit of wrangling, but nothing too hard to handle. That is, until I started to apply the decals, they became extremely brittle and next to impossible to apply without damaging the decal in some way, I dont know if this is specific to the model, or the manufacturer (as this is my first Tamiya build), left all of the small decals off after having so many issues with the larger ones, some what ruined what was that far an enjoyable build.

"TAMIYA, always reliable"

This was a very simple construction, and AGAIN, Tamiya did not dissappoint! Instructions were clear and concise and the model eased together wonderfully. Only issue were the decals. I had some problems so i used the extras from my Tamiya Hayate Frank for the 21 Zero. So, once i upload my pics, u will see that the decals are primarily from the Frank. But, otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this model. I went with the all white construction with black cowling, as I already made a different Zero type in green.

Markings

  • Single sheet of decals contains aircraft code letters, serial numbers
  • national insignia, stencils, and cockpit instruments for five
  • aircraft
